Sunderbans, the home of the Royal Bengal Tigers, is situated in the South East portion of the South 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal. The Sunderbans was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1984. Sunderbans is on one hand a National Park, a Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. It is also a biosphere reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forest of Sunderban harbours an enormous amount of wildlife including jungle cats, axis deer, rhesus monkeys, crocodiles and of course the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Sunderbans is a place of awe and wonder which will leave every visitor spellbound. The best season to visit Sunderbans is December to January.
Getting There
The nearest railhead is Canning which is easily accessible from Kolkata by train. The city of Kolkata is well connected to the rest of the country by rail, road and air transport. Buses are also available from Kolkata to Namkhana, Canning, Sonakhali which all are entry points to the Sunderbans.
