Vetnai

Vetnai is a small village located in Ganjam district of Odisha. Nestled in the laps of the Eastern Ghats, the place is home to innumerable black bucks which roam freely in the mountain slopes. The local people consider the black bucks as a symbol of sanctity and good will. There are a total of about 350 black bucks at Bhetnai. You can also visit the nearby Monglajori Bird Sanctuary. Various species of birds including Whistling duck, Grey-headed lapwing and Asian openbill are sighted in the sanctuary. Chilika Lake is another attraction near Bhetnai which you shouldn't miss out.

Getting There

The nearest railway station is Brahmapur. Aska is 50 km from Brahmapur and regular bus service is available from Brahmapur to reach Aska. Vetnai is 12 km from Aska. Minibuses and trekkers are plying from Aska to Vetnai.

Staying There

There are no proper accommodation facilities at Vetnai. It would be better to stay at Brahmapur where there are a number of good hotels.

Pakke Tiger Reserve

Pakke Tiger Reserve is situated in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The forest lies at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and covers an area of 862 sq km. There are about 27 villages in and around the jungle which are inhabited by the tribal people. Around 60 species of mammals including tiger, elephant, clouded leopard, hog deer, wild dog, capped langur, sambar and Himalayan black bear are residents of the Pakke Tiger Reserve. The Pakke Tiger Reserve is also home to 296 species of birds. The forest is well known for the sightings of the Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill and Rufous-necked Hornbill. Other birds seen at Pakke include white-winged wood duck, yellow-vented warbler, barbet, fish eagle and black-tailed crake.

The nearest major railway station is Guwahati which enjoys excellent rail connectivity with other parts of the country. Pakke Tiger Reserve is 230 km from Guwahati. Hired cars are available from Guwahati to reach Pakke Tiger Reserve.

Kitam Bird Sanctuary

Kitam Bird Sanctuary is located in South Sikkim and is the only bird sanctuary in the state. The place is a paradise for bird lovers and photographers. The sanctuary lies at an altitude ranging from 1200 ft to 3200 ft above sea level and covers an area of about 6 sq km. One can get a stunning view of the Rangeet River Valley and the whole sanctuary from the Tarey Bhir watch tower. Kitam Bird sanctuary is home to around 105 species of birds including oriental white-eye, blue-throated barbet, long-tailed broadbill, flycatcher etc. Various species of butterflies are also observed at the sanctuary. During October, many migratory birds visit this sanctuary.

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri. Kitam Bird Sanctuary is 110 km from New Jalpaiguri. Hired cars are available from New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri to reach the sanctuary.

Panna National Park

Panna National Park is situated 25 km from Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The park is located on the banks of the Ken river and spreads over an area of 543 sq km. The Panna National Park mainly consists of dense forest of Sal trees. Among the animals found here are the tiger, leopard, wolf, sambhar, sloth bear, chital and porcupine. A separate sanctuary named Ken Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary has been developed for the protection and conservation of the Gharials. A boat ride from the park to the Ken Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary to get a close view of the Gharials is an unique experience. The best time to visit Panna National Park is December to March. The park remains closed from June to September.

Satpura National Park

Satpura National Park is situated in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. The park derives its name from the Satpura Range. The Satpura National Park spans over an area of 1427 sq km and is home to various wild animals including tiger, leopard, wild boar, Gaur, bear, four horned antelope, Nilgai, black buck, fox and porcupine. Many species of birds also live in this forest. The park remains closed from 16th July to 16th October. Jungle safari is conducted in the morning from 6 am to 11 am and in the evening from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary

Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh. The sanctuary covers an area of 860 sq km. The vegetation consists of tropical dry deciduous mixed forest, bamboo and mixed teak forest. The Pakhal Lake, a large scenic artificial lake is located in the middle of the forest which adds beauty to the place.  The Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a range of wild animals including the leopard, tiger, panther, sambar, deer, sloth bear, wild dog, fox and jackal. Many species of migratory birds visit the Pakhal Lake during winter.

Keibul Lamjao National Park

Keibul Lamjao National Park is located in Bishnupur district of Manipur. The park covers an area of 40 sq km and is the only floating park in the world. The Keibul Lamjao National Park is characterized by floating decomposed plant materials called phumdis. The main attraction of the national park is the Manipur Eld's Deer or Sangai. The Sangai (also called Dancing Deer) is an endangered species which is found only in the Keibul Lamjao National Park. Apart from Sangai, the park is home to other mammal species including Hog Deer, Sambar, Large Indian Civet, Jackal, Jungle Cat, Common Shrew and Flying Fox. Many reptiles and birds species are also found in this national park.

Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary

Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the North-East Indian state of Tripura. The forest spans over an area of 190 sq km and is rich in flora and fauna. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1988. The main attraction of Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary is the Indian Bison. Apart from bison, the sanctuary is home to spectacled langur, golden langur, capped langur and stump-tailed macaque. Several species of birds are also seen in this forest.

Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary

Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Peren district of Nagaland. It is located at a distance of 37 km from Dimapur and 111 km from Kohima. The sanctuary covers an area of 202 sq km and possesses a rich wealth of flora and fauna. The Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the Hoolock Gibbon which is the only species of Gibbon found in India. Other animals found in this forest include elephants, Sambhar, barking deer, flying squirrel, wild dog, sloth bear and tiger. Different species of birds namely hornbill, black stork and common pheasant also live in the sanctuary.

Betla National Park

Betla National Park (also known as Palamau National Park) is situated in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The park spans over an area of 930 sq km. The forest hosts a wide variety of wild animals including tiger, elephant, leopard, sloth bear, wolf, jackal, Sambhar, Nilgai, Gaur, Chital, bison and several species of deers. The Betla National Park is also home to a range of bird species namely hornbill, pied hornbill, crested serpent eagle, black partridge, peafowl and jungle fowl. Periyar National Park

Periyar National Park is situated in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. The forest covers an area of 925 sq km. It surrounds the Periyar Lake, a reservoir formed by the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam. The place was declared as a National Park in the year 1982. The Periyar National Park is famous for housing elephants and tigers. Other wild animals that live in this jungle include gaur, sambar, wild pig, deer, sloth bear, jungle cat and Nilgiri Tahr. Birds such as Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Blue winged Parakeet, Sri Lanka Frogmouth and Black necked Stork are seen in this forest. Wild Ass Sanctuary

Wild Ass Sanctuary is situated in the Little Rann of Kutch in the western parts of Gujarat. The sanctuary was established in the year 1973 and spans over an area of 4953 sq km. It is the largest abode of the Indian Wild Ass (Equas Hemionus Khur) in the country. This rare animal is found nowhere else in the world. Apart from the wild ass, the sanctuary is home to nilgai, desert fox, black buck, hyena and wolf. Birds like flamingo, pelican, common crane and other migratory birds visit this place during winter.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. The National Park covers an area of 105 sq km. The main attraction of the jungle is the tiger which attract visitors from across India. Apart from tigers, Bandhavgarh is home to 250 species of birds and 22 species of mammals. Various wild animals including deer, wild cat, hyena, sloth bear, leopard, bison and Nilgai are seen at the park. Bandhavgarh also hosts bird species like Paradise Flycatcher, Woolly Necked Stork, Peacock, Asian Warbler, Malabar Grey Hornbill and Pied Hornbill. Biligiri Ranganatha Temple Sanctuary

Biligiri Ranganatha Temple Sanctuary is situated in Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka at its border with Tamil Nadu. The sanctuary is nestled in the lap of Biligiri Rangana Hills. The elevation of the hill range varies from 3300 ft to 5000 ft above sea level. Elephants, leopards and tigers are often seen in the forest. The sanctuary is also home to barking deer, chital and gaur. Various species of birds like peacock, hill myna, crested serpent eagle and whistling thrush live in this forest. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the months of January to April.

Gir National Park

Gir National Park (also known as Sasan Gir) is situated in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the only forest in India which houses the Asiatic Lion. The park spans over an area of 1412 sq km. Marine National Park

Marine National Park is located near Jamnagar in the Indian state of Gujarat. The park consists a total of 42 islands out of which only Narara island is connected with the mainland. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is located 65 km from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The place received its status of bird sanctuary in the year 1969. The sanctuary spans over an area of 11500 hectares. There are a total of 360 islets in this lake. Every winter hundreds of migratory birds from Europe visit this place. Birds like flamingo, heron, pelican, crane are seen in the islets of the lake during the months of December to March. Boating is also done in the waters of Nal Sarovar lake.

Manas National Park

Manas National Park is a biosphere reserve situated in the North East Indian state of Assam. It covers an area of 950 sq km and has received the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Park got its name from the Manas River which flows through the heart of the forest. Manas National Park hosts a wide variety of flora and fauna. Animals like Tiger, Elephant, Indian Rhinoceros, Clouded Leopard, Golden Langur, Pygmy Hog and Hog Deer are the main attractions of this jungle. Of these the Golden Langur, Assam Roofed Turtle, Hispid Hare and Pygmy Hog are found exclusively in Manas National Park and is not found anywhere else. Jim Corbett National Park

Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary

Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 20 km from Bhubaneswar in the Indian state of Odisha. The forest was designated as an elephant reserve in the year 1982. Apart from elephants, the sanctuary is home to leopard, chital, wild pig, pangolin, bear, wolf, hyena and other wild animals. Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park is located 80 km from Mysore in the state of Karnataka. This park was established as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in the year 1973. The forest covers an area of 874 sq km. The Bandipur National Park hosts a variety of wild animals including tigers, leopards, elephants, gaur, hyenas, deer, sloth bears and wild dogs. Various species of birds and snakes also live in this jungle. The National Park remains open from 6 am to 8 am and again from 4 pm to 6 pm. Cars are available on hire basis for jungle safari.

Various species of deer like the spotted deer, barking deer, Sambhar and four-horned deer are seen in this national park. The Kanha National Park remains open every year from 16th October to 30th June. Jungle safari is conducted every day from 6 to 11 am and again from 3 to 5:30 pm.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the North East Indian state of Tripura. It is located at a distance of 28 km from Agartala. Although the sanctuary covers a small area of 18.59 sq km, it is quite attractive. The forest is home to Clouded Leopards. The unique spectacled monkey which is the state animal of Tripura is also seen in this sanctuary. Various species of birds live in this sanctuary and migratory birds visit during the winter season. Boating in the lake inside this forest is an added attraction for the tourists. A zoological garden has also been developed inside the sanctuary.

The nearest airport from Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is Agartala which is 28 km away. Buses and auto rickshaws are plying from Agartala to Sepahijola.

There is a cottage beside the lake at Sepahijala. You may rest at the cottage during daytime. Night stay is prohibited.

Dachigam National Park

Dachigam National Park is situated at a distance of 22 km from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. It spans over an area of 141 sq. km. The variation in altitude of this national park is vast ranging from 5500 ft to 14000 ft above sea level. The forest houses a number of wild animals like Musk Deer, Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Grey Langur, Leopard Cat etc. The place is also home to numerous bird species including the Black Bulbul, Himalayan Monal, Golden Oriole, Pygmy Owlet, Kashmir Flycatcher, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Kocklass Pheasant and Bearded Vulture.

Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole National Park is situated in Kodagu and Mysore district of Karnataka. The park derives its name from the word naga meaning snake and hole referring to streams. It is located at a distance of 80 km from Mysore. Spanning over an area of 572 sq km, the park is home to elephants, sambhar, bison, sloth bears, wild dogs, tigers, leopards etc. Apart from these there are numerous reptiles and bird species in this forest. The best time to visit Nagarhole National Park is October to March. There are two entry points to this national park. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is situated in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The tiger reserve spans over an area of 625 sq km. The forest consists of Teak, Mahua, Palash, Arjun and other trees. Various wild animals including tiger, leopard, panther, sambhar, hyena, chital, bear and bison are sighted in this jungle. During the winter hundreds of migratory birds visit the lake in this forest. The Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve remains open from November to June. Jungle safari is conducted two times a day - in the morning and in the afternoon. The reserve remains closed on every Tuesday.

The nearest major railway station is Nagpur. Nagpur enjoys excellent rail connectivity with other parts of the country. Moharli, the main gate to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is 180 km from Nagpur. Moharli is also easily accessible from Chandrapur railway station which is 45 km away.

Pench National Park

Pench National Park (officially known as Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park) is located in the southern reaches of the Satpura hill ranges. The forest covers an area of 757 sq km and spans over both the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Pench River flows through this jungle. The park houses a number of wild animals including tiger, leopard, bison, fox, nilgai etc. The place is also a paradise for bird watchers with around 200 species of birds living in this forest. There are three entry gates for jungle safari at Pench National Park.

Khawasa is situated on the Nagpur-Jabalpur National Highway. Pench National Park is 10 km from Khawasa. Hired cars are available from Khawasa to reach the forest. The best way to reach Pench National Park is to hire a car from Jabalpur or Nagpur railway station to get to Pench. Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary

Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the foothills of Maikal Hill in Chhattisgarh. The forest consists of Sal, Saja, Tinsa, Bamboo and other trees. There are tribal villages surrounding the forest. Spanning over an area of 553 sq km, the sanctuary is home to tigers, leopards, wild buffalo, bison, chital, barking deer etc. Numerous species of birds are also seen in this forest. Jungle safari is conducted in this sanctuary two times a day - once in the morning and once in the evening. Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary remains open from November to June.

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park is situated in the region between Aravali and Vindhya ranges. The forest is located at a distance of 12 km from Sawai Madhopur. It received the status of national park in the year 1980. Ranthambore Fort is situated atop a hill. At present there are around 50 tigers in Ranthambore. Various species of birds like Common Kestrel, Red Rumped Swallow, Woolly Necked Stork, Brown Rock Chat, Spotted Owlet are seen here. Langur, leopards and sloth bears are also seen at Ranthambore.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is situated close to Gorumara National Park in West Bengal. Though the forest is relatively small, it hosts a variety of flora and fauna. The forest is famous for its elephant population. You can also see one-horned Rhinoceros, Gaur, deers, Nilgai and reptiles here. One can also witness a huge number of species of birds at Chapramari. The sanctuary remains closed from 16th June to 15th September.

Mendabari forest is situated in Dooars area of West Bengal. It is one of the newest addition to the tourism map of Dooars. Raidak Forest is situated near Alipurduar in West Bengal. On the way to Raidak one will see lush green tea gardens on the sides of the road. Rajabhatkhawa

Rajabhatkhawa is a small town located on the outskirts of Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal. It is the main gateway to the tiger reserve. A Vulture Breeding Centre has been developed at Rajabhatkhawa by the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC). The place is surrounded by dense forest which gives an unmatched beauty to it. The green forests, grey hills, cascading river, roar of the tigers make Rajabhatkhawa an ideal spot for experiencing jungle tourism at its best. You can of course visit the nearby Buxa Tiger Reserve. Entry permits for the Tiger Reserve are issued from Nature Interpretation Centre at Rajabhatkhawa. One can go for a 5 km trek to Buxa Fort. You can also visit Sikiajhora from Rajabhatkhawa via Damanpur where you can experience a boat ride through the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

Sunderbans

Sunderbans, the home of the Royal Bengal Tigers, is situated in the South East portion of the South 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal. The Sunderbans was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1984. Sunderbans is on one hand a National Park, a Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. It is also a biosphere reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forest of Sunderban harbours an enormous amount of wildlife including jungle cats, axis deer, rhesus monkeys, crocodiles and of course the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Sunderbans is a place of awe and wonder which will leave every visitor spellbound. The best season to visit Sunderbans is December to January.

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Balasore district of Odisha. Covering an area of 227 sq. km, Kuldiha is separated from Simlipal National Park by Sukhuapata and Gagua hills. The forest is home to tigers, leopards, elephants, wild pigs, Giant squirrel and various species of deer. A number of birds are also seen in this sanctuary. One can find trees like shal, devdaru, shimul, shirish and mangrove in Kuldiha Sanctuary.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is situated in the Indian state of West Bengal. Located at a distance of 50 km from Jalpaiguri town, the forest covers an area of 80 sq. km. Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary

Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary (popularly known as Parmadan Deer Park) is situated at a distance of 113 km from Kolkata. The park is located on the banks of river Ichamati and spreads over an area of 92 hectares. There is a children's park, zoo and tourist bungalow in this wildlife sanctuary. Famous Bengali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandhopadhyay's house is located nearby. There are about 400 deers in this deer park. You can also go for a boat ride down the river. Bethuadahari is a calm, serene and peaceful forest situated in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal. A wildlife sanctuary has come up at Bethuadahari which spans over an area of 165 acres. Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary is actually a deer park. More than 500 deers inhabit this forest. Other animals which are found in Bethuadahari include wild cats, peacocks, snakes and various species of birds. It is the perfect destination for those who love nature. You can also visit Palashi, 24 km from here. The battle of Plassey was fought between Siraj Ud Daulah and Robert Clive at the grounds of Palashi.

Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary is situated very close to Shantiniketan in West Bengal. Sal and Piyal trees surround the forest. Here you can see various species of deers and peacocks. There are watch towers and jungle paths all over the sanctuary for tourists to walk around and catch glimpses of wildlife especially deers. A large lake is located beside the forest where there is a bird sanctuary. Various types of migratory birds are seen here. You can also see other birds and tortoises which add to the beauty of the lake. Other attractions include Kankali Pith temple and art gallery at Bolpur. The sanctuary remains closed on Wednesdays.

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Munger district of Bihar. Situated at the foothills of Mahadev hill, this wildlife sanctuary covers an area of 681 sq. km. The forest of Bhimbandh hosts abundant Sal, Mahua, Shimul, Haritaki, Amlaki, Arjuna and other trees. The Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is home to animals like leopard, tiger, sambhar, bear, bison, chital, wolf etc. Apart from these there are numerous birds in the forest. There are hotsprings adjacent to the wildlife sanctuary. The waters of the hotsprings have a temperature of around 52°-62°C. You can also visit the Kumari Falls, Rameshwar Kund and Kharagpur Lake.

Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary

Ushakothi (Badrama) Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Sambalpur district of Odisha. Spanning over an area of 304 sq. km, this sanctuary is home to a large population of tigers, leopards, panthers, elephants, sloth bears, sambhar, chital and other species of deers. The singing of the birds will make you feel that you are never alone in this dense decidous forest. There are three watch towers for viewing wild animals. Best time to visit Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary is October to April.

Ushakothi (Badrama) Wildlife Sanctuary is located 38 km from Sambalpur. Sambalpur is well connected to the rest of the country by train. From Sambalpur you can get jeep to reach the sanctuary.

Latpanchar

Latpanchar is a beautiful scenic place situated in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a paradise for bird watchers and photographers. On a clear day, one can even get a glimpse of the Teesta River and even the distant Gorumara National Park. You can also take a guide and go for trekking inside the sanctuary. Namthing Pokhari is an added attraction, 2 km from Latpanchar. Salamander or Himalayan Newt Breeding Centre is located at Namthing Pokhri.


Getting There

The nearest railway station from Latpanchar is New Jalpaiguri. New Jalpaiguri enjoys good rail connectivity to other parts of the country. Hired cars are available from New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri to reach Latpanchar.

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary is located in the districts of Angul, Nayagarh and Boudh in the state of Odisha. The sanctuary is spread over a vast area of about 750 sq km. The river Mahanadi before falling into the Bay of Bengal passes through the hills of Odisha forming a 22 km long magnificent gorge where the sanctuary is situated. The area was declared as Satkosia Tiger Reserve in the year 2007, comprising of two sanctuaries - Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Sanctuary. You can see elephants, deers, nilgai, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, wild dogs and a number of birds at Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary. Apart from these the sanctuary also has reptiles like mugger crocodile, snakes and fresh water turtle. There is a waterfalls named Bhimgara Falls located inside the sanctuary. There are also watch towers to see the wildlife of the forest. Best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to May.


Getting There

The best way to visit Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary is to reach the sanctuary by OTDC operated buses from Athagarh. Otherwise you can reach Cuttack by train. You can reach Angul from Cuttack by bus. Distance from Cuttack to Angul is 61 km. Tikarpada is located 58 km from Angul. Hired cars are available from Angul to reach Satkosia. The forest is about 30 km from Tikarpada.

There are a number of forest bungalows at Satkosia. Tikarpada Nature Camp is situated at Tikarpada. It remains open from October to March. Tariff - Rs. 1500 for two persons including stay, food and trekking guide charges.

Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary

Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Kulik Bird Sanctuary) is a heaven for bird watchers. It is claimed by some as Asia's second largest bird sanctuary. Spanning over an area of 130 hectares this sanctuary is home to 164 species of birds including Asian Koel, Red Whiskered Bulbul, Munia, White Breasted Water Hen, Magpie Robin, Parakeet etc. Every year thousands of migratory birds visit this sanctuary during winter. There is a watchtower for bird watching. Apart from birds there are around 64 species of butterflies and various species of reptiles at this sanctuary. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from September to January.

Raiganj is the nearest railway station from Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary.The station at Raiganj is connected to Kolkata by train. Buses are also plying from Kolkata to Raiganj. The sanctuary is 3 km from Raiganj. Rickshaws are available from Raiganj to reach Kulik Bird Sanctuary.

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the vicinity of Siliguri and is a paradise for bird lovers. The forest is also home to elephants. Sukna, the entry point to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is 10 km from Siliguri. The glimpse of Mt. Kanchenjunga through the dense bushes and trees of the forest add to the beauty of this jungle. Sukna Lake is situated inside the forest. During winter thousands of migratory birds visit this lake. The sanctuary remains open from 8 am to 4 pm. It is closed during monsoon season.


Getting There

The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri which enjoys good connectivity with the rest of the country. The town of Siliguri is situated very close to New Jalpaiguri. The sanctuary stands beside the road leading to Darjeeling from Siliguri. Buses, jeeps and taxis are available from Siliguri to get to Sukna.

Bhitarkanika National Park

Bhitarkanika National Park is situated in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the second largest mangrove forest of the country. Although tigers and elephants are not seen in this sanctuary but deer, wild pig, wild cat and birds are frequently observed. The number of different species of kingfishers is attractive. Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a large number of crocodiles. White crocodiles are also seen in this sanctuary. Every year the place where Brahmani River meets the Bay of Bengal gets full of Olive Ridley Turtles. They lay their eggs there and then go back to the Indian Ocean.


Getting There

The nearest railway station is Bhadrak which is well connected to other parts of the country. Chandbali, the entry point to Bhitarkanika National Park is 50 km from Bhadrak. Private cars and buses are plying from Bhadrak to Chandbali. From Chandbali you have to hire a launch to get to the interior of Bhitarkanika Sanctuary. Permits for entering Bhitarkanika is issued from Khola, 16 km from Chandbali.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. At a distance of 82 km from Chennai, Vedanthangal is one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India. The sanctuary consists of a 60 hectare wide natural water body. Many local and migratory birds are seen at Vedanthangal during the winter months. A number of species of birds like Painted Stork, Open Billed Stork, Gray Pelican, Small Cormorant, Spot Billed Duck, Large and Little Egret, Pond Heron are seen here. The best time to visit Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is from October to February.

The nearest railway station from Vedanthangal is Chengalpattu. This station lies on the Chennai Egmore-Villupuram branch line. Chengalpattu is 55 km from Chennai Egmore and Vedanthangal is 34 km from Chengalpattu. Chengalpattu is easily accessible by rail from various parts of the country.
